Protect fishery resources

Posted: Wednesday, February 05, 2003

Anybody who has lived in Washington, Oregon or California knows that economic development occurred there at the expense of salmon streams and the saltwater estuaries that are nurseries for many saltwater species. Up and down the coast, many fisheries have crashed as a result.

Gutting the Habitat Division of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will greatly reduce its ability to protect our fishery resources. When the last five commissioners of ADF&G all oppose transferring the Division to the Department of Natural Resources, as Gov. Murkowski plans to do, we should all be listening. Do we want development projects that cannot stand the review of professional, committed habitat and fishery biologists? The Murkowski administration should walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Good science over politics? You bet.
