New harbormaster starts March 2

JUNEAU - Juneau Docks and Harbors announced Tuesday that Haines Harbormaster Phil Benner will become Juneau's new harbormaster on March 2.

Benner, chosen from a field of 20 candidates, will replace Lou McCall, who died in November.

Before working in Haines for two years, Benner was a senior officer for Kodiak Harbors and served several tours in the Persian Gulf with the U.S. Navy.

Docks and Harbors Board Chairman Don Etheridge said the new harbormaster will be expected to continue McCall's efforts to improve Juneau's image with the cruising public.

"Juneau had a real bad rap for awhile with travel magazines and travel guides and so forth" because of problems with moorage scheduling and limited capacity, Etheridge said.

Through Port Director John Stone, Benner encouraged harbor patrons to meet him at the Rotary Club Boat Show on March 21 and 22 or in the Aurora Harbor office after he's begun work.
