Heather Norton checks the breath of Moriah, a horse boarded at the Kodiak Baptist Mission, as a precaution on Thursday after the sudden deaths of two horses in the Kodiak area since Jan. 26. State veterinarian Bob Gerlach issued an order Wednesday restricting transportation of animals to and from Kodiak because of the mysterious illness. The order applies to ferries and airplanes.
