Tongass debate

Posted: Thursday, February 07, 2002

This is in response to Publisher Don Smith's Sunday editorial.

Don, your conclusion that the Tongass is the least logged National Forest is not supported by the facts. But rather than restate the obvious I want to suggest a way to move the Tongass debate to a different level. You should turn your computer off, put away your "Don Young timber fact sheet" and talk and walk with biologists, forest economists, soil scientists and others to try and understand what this forest was, what it is today and what the economic and biological options are for the future.

Get to know the issues for yourself. Understand this forest and how it works. Unless you are willing to educate yourself please never write another Tongass editorial.
