Small business seminar scheduled for February

`Starting Your Own Small Business'' is a two-evening seminar being sponsored this month by the Juneau Small Business Development Center.

Community professionals will speak on business insurance, record keeping, marketing, financing and legal issues. Among the contributors will be Greg Gallagher of Budget Insurance, Bill Hauber of Hauber & James Tax Service, Steve Sorensen of Simpson, Tillinghast, Sorensen & Lorensen, and Richard See of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The seminar is 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 and 24, in the third floor conference room at the Empire building. The cost is $35. Registrations can be taken at 463-3789.

Deadline extended for amateur inventors contest

The deadline for entries in the Alaska Inventors Open has been extended to Feb. 15.

The original deadline, last Friday, was extended because many would-be entrants had trouble completing the detailed entry forms, said Dan Benesch, executive director of the Alaska Inventors Alliance.

The annual amateur competition provides detailed evaluations of new inventions and innovations. Entry packets are available from the alliance in Anchorage at (907) 696-2249 or www.inventorsopen.org.

Items for business time capsule being compiled around state

Members of the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce are being asked to donate letters and artifacts for a time capsule to be opened in 2050.

The chamber is asking members to submit a letter to future generations on company letterhead. The letters are to include comments on current technology. In addition, contributors could add ``a memento of present life in the 49th state, be it legislative, Alaskana, creative, corporate, a collector's item or memorabilia,'' says the chamber solicitation.

Letters will be collected at the chamber's Legislative Appreciation Dinner and Reception at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Baranof Hotel in Juneau.

The time capsule is to be sealed at the chamber's fall conference in Girdwood on Sept. 29. It is to be opened by chamber members and legislators 50 years later.
