A Kentucky painter is looking north for divine inspiration.

Steve Sawyer, who has sold work in 100 countries under the business name Art for God ( this summer.

``Everything I do ends up influencing everything else I do,'' Sawyer said by phone from Versailles, Ky. ``And Juneau, Alaska, is an extremely important part of the improvement of the quality of my work.''

Sawyer has attracted some controversy because of his depiction of Jesus as a boxer with a buff body. But landscapes and portraiture are his mainstays, paying the bills so that he can do his Christian art as well.

In 1997, Sawyer and his wife, Cindy, rode for a couple of weeks on the Glacier Seal, an overnight vessel operated by Mark and Dorie Choquette of Juneau.

Sawyer painted throughout a two-week outing that included an up-close-and-personal look at humpbacks breaking the surface. ``When I get out there in the middle of that wilderness, I enjoy painting as much as I ever have in my life.''

Sawyer said this time he'll look to make connections with a local gallery. ``I think my work is high-quality; I certainly strive to make it so. I want to be affiliated with people who have high standards.''
