Help all our people

Letters

Posted: Thursday, February 08, 2001

I was mostly raised in Douglas. I went to school at the Gastineau Grade School and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School.

As a Douglas Indian Association member, I have been involved since I returned from living in Seattle in 1985. The Douglas Indian Association had no home. We were under the care of Tlingit & Haida Central Council via Resolution. The regroup saw fit on how to help our people. With years of good help (no pay), negotiating with BIA and Tlingit & Haida Council for a release of our programs' dollars, so we can help our people and manage our own programs.

Even today I get no pay and I will probably never see help from these programs. But my heart has been to help the people that need it. We want our people to be treated fairly in all programs. Our goal was eventually to help all our people. My concern in the beginning was the youth and elderly, and still is.
