Former Juneau and Douglas resident Martin Douglas Siverly died Feb. 3, 2001, in Anchorage after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 9, 1949, in Juneau and grew up on Douglas Island. He especially loved the outdoors and hunting, often living near Fish Creek with the Nielson family. From 1968 to 1971 he served in the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific and Vietnam aboard the USS Whiteplains as a gunnerman. After military service he returned to Alaska, working in Fairbanks and later in Anchorage.

His family wrote that he loved his people and was known for his good heart and humor.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather Louis Hicks and birth father Lawrence Siverly. He is survived by his mother, Ella Fortin, brother, Larry Siverly, sisters, Pattie Adkisson and Adele Porter, and several nephews, grandnephews and a grandniece, all of Juneau, and brother, Victor Fortin, of Las Vegas. He is also survived by many close friends who were the family of his heart in Anchorage, where he resided for the past 20 years.

A small memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Northern Light United Church.
