Lack of sponsors blocking girls hoops broadcasts

A lack of sponsors has been blocking radio broadcasts of the Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball games this season.

KJNO-AM 630 has traditionally carried girls games, but station manager Steve Rhyner said the station has not had luck finding the sponsors it needs to bring the games to Juneau listeners this season.

All of the Crimson Bear boys games have been broadcast this season on KINY-AM 800.

Rhyner said KJNO operates under automatic control much of the time, so carrying a game means they have to pay to have a board operator in the studio. The station must also cover the cost of line charges, announcers and other expenses.

"When we do any live broadcast, it takes paid staff," he said.

Rhyner said the station has made contact with a few potential sponsors, but not enough to cover the expenses. He estimated that it costs $300 to $400 to broadcast a weekend series.

Individuals or businesses interested in sponsoring girls' basketball broadcasts can call Rhyner at 586-3630.
