Student Artist in the Spotlight: Jessi Segelhorst

Posted: Friday, February 09, 2007

Age: 18.

Grade: 12th.

School: YaaKoosge Daakahidi Alternative High School.

Reason: "I've drawn my whole life; nobody has taught me what I can do. The class I signed up for didn't say anything about it being Native art, but I like it. It is something new and nothing I am used to."

All in the family: "My mom draws really well, also my uncle paints - he's awesome."

Sound off on the important issues at

Favorite artist: "I don't have a favorite artist. There are lots of great ones out there. I do love music, and if I had to choose my favorite band, it would be either Arch Enemy or Pantera."

Future: "Yes I will keep doing art, it is a way out of the world. I really want to be a mechanic or auto body mechanic - I want to airbrush cars, it sounds like so much fun! I want to be really successful and go far."

Activities: "I work at Parts Plus and deliver auto parts. That and school are my activities."

Her teacher, Shane Brown, says: "Jessi is a multi-talented young woman, whether it's working on cars or producing one of her gorgeous, finely-detailed drawings. Jessi is dedicated and enthusiastic. She has a creative and open-minded outlook about art and how to capture the world through a pen or pencil."
