ANCHORAGE - An advisory group is calling for the two largest electric utilities in Southcentral Alaska to join forces.
The seven-member group is headed by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich and Chugach Electric Association board chairwoman Elizabeth Vazquez.
The panel was created to consider joint venture options for Chugach and Municipal Light and Power.
According to an estimate by a national consultant, the utilities could save almost $200 million through a merger or by consolidating some functions and working together on expanding future generating capacity.
