FAIRBANKS - Eddie Bauer is scheduled to open a store in this Interior city this spring and also may be heading to Juneau.
Officials at a Fairbanks mall said they have wrapped up a 10-year lease with the Redmond, Wash.-based sportswear chain.
Bentley Mall Manager Ed Willis said renovation began this week on the 4,900 square foot store. ``We still have an opening date of April 27,'' Willis said.
Mark Comstock, director of leasing for Eddie Bauer, said the company has done significant business in Anchorage for several years. While the Fairbanks area is considered a small market, the company is intrigued by the number of residents who get the company's mail-order catalog, Comstock said.
``We feel real comfortable and confident that we're going to do a good business,'' Comstock said.
The company also plans to upgrade its Anchorage store and is considering another franchise for Alaska's largest city, Comstock said.
Eddie Bauer also is looking at opening a store at Juneau, he said.
Eddie Bauer Inc. began in 1921 with a single store in downtown Seattle. The clothing chain now has 570 stores nationwide and generated $1.8 billion in sales in 1998 for parent company Spiegel Inc.
