Letter: Everything possible

Posted: Sunday, February 11, 2001

I wish to respond to the Word of Mouth caller who loved Perseverance Theatre's "Fry Tales" but wished that there were cheaper tickets in town for events. Tickets for "Fry Tales" were half off Perseverance's normal ticket rate in order to accommodate families. We gave away over 500 coupons for $5 tickets to school-age children. Through the generosity of Tlingit-Haida Central Council and BPOE 420, we gave away 20 free tickets to Big Brothers-Big Sisters and Tlingit-Haida Head Start. We had a pay-as-you-can performance. Six ushers per performance got complimentary tickets and each cast-crew member received six complimentary tickets. We also had Rush tickets available for $4.50 for children and $5.50 for adults available at the door if there were available unsold tickets.

Perseverance Theatre does everything possible to make theater affordable for our entire community. We are a not-for-profit professional theater which receives support from the City and Borough of Juneau, the Alaska State Council on the Arts, foundations and corporations, individual donations and ticket sales. As a professional theater, we pay every person involved in a production, plus sets and lights, and in this case, rent at Centennial Hall. I don't think the public realizes how much money it takes to produce a performance of this magnitude. In fact, if we relied on ticket sales alone, each ticket would cost $82.

So, I want to say thank you to Tlingit-Haida Central Council, BPOE 420, and every person who donated time or money to Perseverance Theatre this year and in years past. With all of your help, we will continue to produce quality theater experiences in the state for all ages and income levels.
