Letter: Volunteers needed

Regarding the Juneau Volunteer Fire Department looking for people to serve Juneau as firefighters: I joined the Juneau Department 27 years ago when I was 19. It changed my life and gave me direction. I spent three years with the Juneau Department then moved to Gustavus and started the fire department there.

The Gustavus Fire Department faces the same problem as Juneau: We need more people who are willing to put in a few hours a month to serve the community. We are in serious trouble due to lack of members and we may have to turn off the 911 phone. It is pretty sad in a community of over 400 that we can only get six people willing to help.

Will it take the death of a child or a family member or burning a house to the ground to get people's attention?
