That was a poor vote on initiative resolution

Posted: Wednesday, February 11, 2004

Shame on you Beth Kerttula. On Feb. 4 the single most important piece of anti-capital move legislation this session, HJR 5, was brought to the floor of the House of Representatives, and you voted against it and defeated it. Not only did you vote against it once, but twice. Luckily for Juneau the second time around your vote did not matter. Whose side are you on? In the last several years Juneau has suffered through several statewide ballot initiatives that sought to move the capital from Juneau to somewhere else. The ironic thing is that lately the sponsors don't care where, just somewhere other than Juneau. How could you as an elected official from Juneau stab us in the back in this manner?

In your press comments you said that to pass this bill would hurt minority interests with regard to ballot initiatives. Let me clue you in on something. When it comes to moving the capital, Juneau is a minority with respect to the rest of the state! By voting against this measure you hurt Juneau. Thank goodness for Nancy Dahlstrom and Carl Moses who sided with reason and changed their votes to enable this piece of legislation to pass. I should also point out that all other representatives from Southeast voted in favor of this bill. Does this mean that you're a Southeast Caucus of one? You said that it felt like the right thing to do. From whose perspective, the pro-capital move people in the Mat-su? Certainly not Juneau's friends in Southeast and other parts of the state.

It has cost our community several million dollars and many agonizing and sleepless nights for several dedicated people from our community to fight these initiatives. How many more millions are you willing to cost myself and my fellow citizens to keep the capital in Juneau?
