Metlakatla mayor vows to fight ouster

KETCHIKAN - Metlakatla's mayor plans to fight a vote by village leaders to remove him from office.

John Scudero Jr. said he plans to formally object to the decision made Wednesday by the Metlakatla Indian Community Council.

Scudero was elected in November and took office in early January.

He said he met with about 55 residents Thursday evening and they encouraged him to fight the council's actions.

"They said I was still their mayor, and they still respected me as mayor," he said.

Scudero also plans to circulate a petition calling for all 12 members of the council to step down. He said another petition already has been circulating to call for an independent federal audit of the community's finances. He plans to send the petitions to the federal Secretary of the Interior.

The Ketchikan Daily News reported receiving numerous phone calls that the council had planned to impeach Scudero. Council member Sol Atkinson, however, told the newspaper he didn't know anything about an impeachment effort and later attempts to reach council members were unsuccessful.
