JUNEAU — This week’s Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will highlight “Revenue Cutter Wayanda: Early Exploration of Gastineau Channel.” The lecture begins at 6:30 and again at 8 p.m. tonight.
The U.S. Revenue Cutter Wayanda embarked on a survey voyage in 1868 to assess the recently purchased territory of Alaska. Local historian Jim Geraghty will share tales and images from one of the first Euro-American vessels to explore Gastineau Channel on a previously unrecorded expedition that occurred years before the founding of Juneau.
