I didn't speak up because ...

I would like to have confidence in the president of my country. The fact is, I don't trust George W. as far as I could throw him. This Homeland Security Act is not making me feel secure at all. If you voted for W then let him take your rights away, but I would like to keep mine.

I get this sickly feeling that W and his administration will try to take away as many of our rights as possible - like decide, for our own good, to declare a state of emergency and do away with our constitutional rights because of the threat of terrorism (it's for our own good, remember?). We will be told to just be happy and go along because, after all, W knows things we don't know and for our safety we would need to give up knowing what was going on and who was doing what and all would be censored until W felt we were finally safe.

I know some people will say, "if you haven't got anything to hide then don't worry." I don't have anything to hide, but I would sure hate to lose my ability to protest what this administration is doing just because W does not like criticism while he is trying to start a war and create a deficit of billions for our future generations to deal with. I would sure hate to have my home searched because the police, FBI, CIA no longer needed a search warrant. I would sure hate to be arrested on the street for something that I did not even know the reason for and not be allowed to let my lawyer or family know where I was. I would hate to have all media silenced because they question or search out answers to questions about what our government is doing around the world or for that matter not doing around the world - I figure PBS would be the first to go.

Right now this quote comes to my mind and it goes something like this: "In Germany they first came for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me - and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Will W be coming after the Arab-Americans, the Korean-Americans, the German-Americans, the French-Americans, whatever American? Could it be you or could it be me? Our government has gone after Japanese-Americans, black Americans and Native Americans, just to name a few. Let's not let it do such a shameful act again in the name of homeland security.
