Canadian couple Greg and Denise McHale claimed the team title in the 2004 Fulda Challenge, a cold-weather extreme sports circuit that ended Sunday in Dawson City, Yukon Territory.
Greg McHale, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable in Dawson, and his wife, a fitness instructor, won the series of 13 events with 166 team points, six ahead of an Austrian team. The McHales each received a $5,000 (Canadian) gold nugget.
Fulda Challenge 2004 started in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, on Feb. 2 and included events like ice climbing and an ATV race in Dawson; a snowshoe run on the U.S.-Canada border northwest of Haines; and a mountain bike race up the South Klondike Highway from Skagway to Fraser, British Columbia.
The event was sponsored by a German tire company. The McHales were the only non-European team. For more information, visit the Fulda Challenge Web site at www.fuldachallenge.com.
