Juneau girls victorious in battle of Bears

Crimson Bears cruise past Bartlett Golden Bears

Posted: Thursday, February 12, 2004

Senior Tasha McKoy scored 18 points - most on layups off steals - and freshman Talisa Rhea chipped in 10 as the Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team used energetic defense to trounce Bartlett 61-37 on Wednesday night in Anchorage.

Bartlett's two senior posts, Meghan Hunsaker and Nikki Moss, managed to keep the lid on McKoy's inside game - so she found other ways to contribute.

"She had a really tough time inside," Juneau coach Lesslie Knight said of McKoy. "She scored those baskets in transition, getting steals and finishing layups. ...

"We came out and attacked. We pressed them, and put a lot of pressure on their guards."

McKoy said the Crimson Bears ran a press defense that sealed all of the Golden Bears' passing lanes except up the middle - where she was lurking, waiting to take the ball the other way.

"It was kind of tiring, but it was exciting," McKoy said.

Juneau (9-5 overall) had a balanced scoring attack. In addition to McKoy and Rhea, junior Mary Rehfeld scored nine points, and seniors Alida Bus and Kendri Cesar netted eight points apiece.

"We like to share the ball," McKoy said. "We're very good at passing the ball and finding the open person."

"We're not a very selfish team, and in doing that we can get open layups," said sophomore Jordan Harvey, who got some quality playing time and scored four points in the first game of her first Anchorage trip with the varsity.

Hunsaker led Bartlett (3-11) with 11 points.

Juneau faces West Anchorage (3-8) tonight and will play at Palmer (6-5) on Friday before returning home.

The Crimson Bears' next Southeast games are Feb. 20-21 at Ketchikan.
