FAIRBANKS - Three Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race mushers scratched Monday at Eagle Summit.

Veteran Paul Geoffrion of Whitehorse, Yukon, and rookies Dider Moggia of Whitehorse and Andreas Moser of Switzerland all quit at the base of the 3,685-foot summit.

Nineteen mushers remained in the 1,000-mile sled dog race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse, Yukon. Five mushers had reached Circle City on Monday; first in was Dan Kaduce of Chatanika.

Quest veteran Frank Turner scratched Sunday night, telling Quest officials it was simply becoming too physically challenging.

Rookie Donald Smidt of Wisconsin was withdrawn by race officials on Sunday, citing concerns about dog care.
