Gladys C. Robards

Former Juneau resident Gladys C. Robards died Feb. 9, 2000, at her home in Castle Rock, Wash.

She was born April 4, 1912, at Silver Lake, Wash., to John Dodge and Ida (Grimm) Dodge. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and won the Miss Washington State Health Contest in the 1920s and was a runnerup at the national competition in Chicago.

She moved to Alaska in the 1940s and lived in Juneau for 11 years, Anchorage for five years, Sitka for two years and Fairbanks for two years. She attended Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, writing poetry, reading and playing pinochle. She loved the Pacific Northwest.

Survivors include her sons Clifford G. Robards of Sitka, John W. Robards of Castle Rock, daughters Dorothy Messerschmidt of Forks, Wash., and Ruth Robards of Seattle. She is survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her spouse Clifford Robards, her son George Robards and her sister Myrtle Alger.

Services were held Saturday in Washington.
