DCED awards grants to SE businesses
JUNEAU - The Department of Community and Economic Development announced 13 grant recipients to help market value-added salmon products. The grant program, administered through the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is to help the Alaska salmon industry become more a market-driven industry and less production-driven.
Nine of the companies nominated for the grants, pending approval by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are from Alaska. The five from Southeast are:
Omega Sea, $42,500 to market its flaked chum-salmon fish food targeting the home aquarium market.
Alaska Fisherman's Marketing Group, $40,000 to provide an array of salmon products, from lox to sausage, to a consortium of hotel chefs in Missouri.
Kake Foods, $25,000 for mainstream distribution of a salmon sausage pizza topping.
Wind and Tide, $25,000 for demonstrating to high-end restaurants that salmon frozen onboard at minus 40 degrees produces a quality fish that equals or exceeds fresh salmon.
Pelican Seafoods, $24,500 for marketing pin-bone-out, pink salmon fillets to a network of East Coast brokers.
