Firm and title: Terry Fagerstrom and her husband Darin Fagerstrom are partners in Alaska Hydro-Sports, a business founded two years ago which branched out last November into ski gear. The couple has lived in Juneau all of their lives.
Services: Alaska Hydro-Sports rents water bikes during the summer. "We are avid skiers and no one in town was doing ski sales, so we thought we would do something about it," Terry Fagerstrom said.
Darin handles the technical end of the business, and Terry does the paperwork.
They retail the Atomic line, made in New Hampshire. "We both ski that line," Terry Fagerstrom said. "We think it's excellent, and it's easy to sell something you really believe in."
They sell Atomic skis, bindings, poles, and boots and will do special orders. "We are running this out of our house to try to keep the overhead down," Fagerstrom said. They have a limited number of fat to mid-fat skis on hand, and some women's boots.
Quotable: "Atomic is the leader in the industry. Their latest product is an integrated binding and ski. What's cool is that it mounts into pre-drilled holes so you can adjust the bindings to a different boot without re-drilling the ski. Once the binding is mounted, you can move it forward or back - to get a more aggressive ski or to get in the back seat for one of those deep powder days. The entire binding flexes, so it gives you a smoother turning radius."
Family: Darin Fagerstrom's uncle lives in Juneau and sells Nordic Tug Boats. His brother and a cousin also live in Juneau. Terry's family lives in Wasilla. The couple has two children, Kyle, 7, and Brita, 5.
The kids "have been skiing since conception. They haven't had a choice," Terry Fagerstrom said with a laugh.
