JUNEAU - The Ursa Major Youth Ensemble will perform a short concert, show the film "Mao to Mozart" and hold a discussion about Chinese culture at 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Nickelodeon Theater. The event is a fund-raiser for the group's China tour in June.
Ursa Major is a children's classical music ensemble that plays under the direction of Suzuki method violin teacher Guo Hua Xia. The ensemble will play work by Mozart and one traditional Chinese piece.
"Mao to Mozart" is a documentary about violinist Isaac Stern's visit to China in the late 1970s. Director Xia and Jenifer Shapland, who studied at Beijing University, will speak on Chinese culture, living in China during the Cultural Revolution, and what it was like to be present at Stern's concert during his '70s visit.
Suggested donation for admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more details contact Nancy DeCherney at 586-8282.
