Coast Guard eye on grounded ship

ANCHORAGE - The Coast Guard is monitoring a grounded fishing vessel loaded with 12,000 gallons of diesel fuel near Cape Lazaref on the southeast side of Unimak Island, at the eastern end of the Aleutians.

Five fishermen were rescued from the 140-foot American Star, which caught fire Friday. None were injured. In addition to the diesel fuel, the vessel was carrying 200 gallons of hydraulic oil and 100 gallons of lube oil.

The Coast Guard flew over the vessel Sunday morning and found no sign of fuel leaking, said spokesman Fletcher Mitchell.

A tugboat and a merchant vessel were standing by. But seas to 14 feet and winds to 22 knots made it impossible to board the grounded vessel, he said.

``They're looking at salvage options right now, but the weather is too crummy to actually gain access to the boat,'' Mitchell said.
