I think it is about time people living in Hoonah, Tenakee Springs, Angoon, Sitka and Kake should be able to depend on a stable ferry schedule. They have two choices: the ferry system and a small airline company. If the weather is bad, they do not get air service, leaving the ferry system as the only option.
Sound off on the important issues at
I was in Angoon the other week and didn't get air service for at least five days. Luckily, there was no medical emergency.
It seems like running the ferry to Hoonah, Tenakee Springs, Angoon and on to Sitka would be more efficient and cost worthy than just to Hoonah, back to Auke Bay; to Angoon, back to Auke Bay; and just the fast ferry to Sitka. I don't know what kind of schedule Kake has, so I can't comment on that portion.
I do know that Hoonah, Tenakee Springs, Angoon and Kake depend a lot on the ferry system, especially in the winter months for travel to Sitka and Juneau for medical reasons and shopping.
