JUNEAU - Gov. Sean Parnell today announced a new effort to raise awareness of the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault in Alaska. In addition to the governor's comprehensive domestic violence initiative that is currently being considered by the Legislature, a statewide march has been scheduled for March 31.

"We must raise awareness of this epidemic and send a clear message that sexual violence, and domestic violence in any form, will not be tolerated in our state," Parnell said. "I invite all Alaskans to participate. If we band together to march against violence in our homes and communities, we will begin a movement that will eradicate fear and abuse in our state. Together, we can stand for what's right and end abuse in Alaska."

Parnell will lead the march in Juneau, beginning at noon March 31 at the Capitol. Parnell is encouraging communities to organize marches across the state.

April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month. The March Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is designed to raise awareness of domestic violence in Alaska.
