Juneau Soccer Club would like to publicly thank and recognize sponsors Dillon & Findley and organizer Leslie Houston for once again putting on a fabulous Holiday Cup soccer tournament. JSC is not affiliated with the tournament but many of our members, past, present, and future, have enjoyed it year after year. The tournament has enlivened Juneau's holiday season for 17 years since Paul Dillon and his kids, looking for a winter break activity, hatched the idea, rounded up some players, rented gym space, and with the help of Noel Shima, put on a four-team co-ed event in 1992 for elementary and middle school players.
Leslie Houston signed on to help in 1994 and, along with Paul Dillon, has remained the chief organizer behind the scene for 15 years. The tournament continues to grow and has found a new home in the Wells Fargo Dimond Park Field House. We like that Holiday Cup is open to all players starting late elementary through high school, as well as college students home on break. There are even masters and classics divisions for adults who can't stop playing the Beautiful Game and want to renew old soccer friendships and start new ones.
We also want to thank the volunteer coaches who enter the teams, and the referees. They make the games happen once the tournament begins. 2009 was a record year for Holiday Cup with 38 teams, more than 500 participants and two new sponsors - Hangar on the Wharf and Reed Stoops & Associates.
The tournament is a great local tradition and holiday gift to soccer lovers and the community at large and we hope it never ends.
Tom Paul, for Juneau Soccer Club board and members
