Mark Sleightholm of England mushes his team out of the starting chute Saturday for the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in Whitehorse, Yukon. The 1,000-mile race has 29 participants and will finish in Fairbanks in about 11 days. Two-time champion Lance Mackey chose not to try for a third straight championship, leaving a handful of experienced mushers as favorites, including Hans Gatt, former Iditarod champion Martin Buser and Jon Little. Mackey said his money is on Gatt of Whitehorse, who has won the race three times.
