Kris Dorsey's kindergarten and first-grade students at Angoon Elementary School take a virtual field trip last week to Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kan. Through the use of Tandberg video-conferencing technology, video cameras, Elmo projectors, microphones and TV monitors, the children are able to interact with guest presenters, see live animals, ask questions and participate in activities with materials that have already been sent to the school. This year, the children have taken virtual trips to the Indianapolis Zoo in Indiana, the Lee Richardson Zoo in Kansas and the New York Hall of Science. They also use the technology to meet with other schools in the district, Tenakee Springs on Tuesdays and Klukwan on Thursdays, to read with other children their age, present plays, talk about books, share songs or listen to special guest readers from these communities.
