FAIRBANKS - A 40-year-old Fairbanks man died Sunday after driving his snowmobile off a 60-foot gravel pile.
Gary Baldwin was pronounced dead at the scene on the dike system near the Tanana River south of Fairbanks.
Alaska State Troopers took a call on the incident just before 5 p.m.
A witness said Baldwin had been driving his snowmobile up the back side of the gravel pile, which had an incline like a ramp on its east side but an edge more like a cliff on the west.
On the fatal ride, Baldwin failed to stop at the edge, drove off the 60-foot face and crashed.
The witness administered CPR until authorities arrived.
Troopers say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
