FAIRBANKS — The latest race is over for four-time Yukon Quest champion Hans Gatt.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Gatt scratched in Central after falling into a river overflow two miles before Birch Creek and suffering second-degree frostbite on both hands.

The 52-year-old musher from Whitehorse said he spent an hour pulling his dogs out of the water, not noticing how cold it had gotten.

Gatt says the Birch Creek area may have gotten down to around 50 below zero that night.
