The Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team jumped up one spot in the latest Alaska Sportswriters High School Basketball Polls, released today.
The Crimson Bears (11-4 overall), who beat Colony twice last weekend, now are third among Class 4A girls teams with 30 points. Last week they were tied for fourth with Service (12-2, 14 points), which fell to fifth.
Undefeated Chugiak (13-0, 64) leads the poll, with Wasilla (12-2, 42) second and East (9-7, 26) fourth. Juneau plays on the road against Lathrop, West Valley and North Pole today through Saturday.
West Anchorage (13-2, 62) remains atop the Class 4A boys poll, followed by Bartlett, West Valley and Colony. Ketchikan (12-5, 11) is the sole Southeast team, tied for fifth with East Anchorage.
Mount Edgecumbe holds the second-place spot in the Class 3A boys and girls polls. The Mount Edgecumbe boys (9-2, 43) moved up one spot this week and trail only Heritage Christian (14-1, 64).
The Mount Edgecumbe girls (12-1, 52) picked up four first-place votes this week and considerably narrowed the gap with top-ranked Monroe Catholic (9-4, 56). The Petersburg girls (9-3, 6) fell out of the top five and are tied for sixth.
In other polls:
Undefeated Cook Inlet Academy remained atop Class 2A boys voting, with Unalakleet second. Southeast schools fill the next three spots, with Hoonah third, Kake fourth and Yakutat fifth.
Ninilchik held onto the top ranking in Class 2A girls voting by just one point over Bristol Bay. Skagway is third, Galena fourth, Yakutat fifth and Hoonah sixth.
The Fort Yukon boys and McGrath girls hold the top spots in Class 1A voting. There are no Class 1A schools in Southeast.
