Eaglecrest Ski Area February activities - February is "Love the Snow Month" at Eaglecrest Ski Area. From Feb. 5-21, adults may enter to win a ski trip to Alyeska each time they visit the mountain. In addition to a full slate of ski and snowboard classes, special events include: "Yes You Can!" annual women's ski workshop on Feb. 19; Nordic ski clinics on Feb. 19-21; and "Get Out of Your Rut!" adult ski workshop on Feb. 20. Raincountry Flyfishers fly-tying meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Mendenhall River Community School library for a presentation by Tony Soltys on flies that a very effective for early season cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden char. Alaska Department of Fish & Game hunter education course - The Alaska Department of Fish & Game will hold its next hunter education course on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 18-19, at the indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. The course will meet from 6-9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. Students must pick up a study packet, costing $10, at the shooting range or from ADF&G's Douglas office, Room 210. The course covers firearms safety and handling, wildlife conservation and management, game laws and regulations, hunter ethics and hunter responsibility. Gastineau Channel Little League registration - GCLL volunteers will be at Nugget Mall on weekends through the month of February to sign up youths age 5-17. Registration will take place on Saturdays - Feb. 19 and 26 - from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays - Feb. 20 and 27 - from noon to 4 p.m. Online registration also is available (see other listing). Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. ADF&G Indoor Shooting Range closure - Due to a turnover of staff at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's indoor shooting range, the range will be suspend normal public shooting hours beginning Monday, Feb. 14. The department's Division of Wildlife Conservation is working to fill staff vacancies and hopes to reopen the range to public shooting in a few weeks.
