State may cover cuts to Alaska fisheries

JUNEAU - Gov. Sarah Palin has offered amendments to the state budget that give an additional $7.2 million to state fisheries management programs. The amendments are intended to cover for $7.5 million in recent congressional cuts to Alaska fisheries programs.

State legislators reviewed the amendments in the House Finance Subcommittee on Thursday night.

The cuts in federal funding included $400,000 to the Sport Fishing Division of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and nearly $2 million in marine mammal research.
