Recalling heroism of Elizabeth Peratrovich

Posted: Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Tuesday was Elizabeth Peratrovich Day in Alaska. Peratrovich's life and work speaks to the true heroism and courage of speaking for equality among all peoples.

The movie (available in DVD) "For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska" addresses in a superb way one of the untold chapters of the American civil rights movement - and particularly as it related to Alaska Natives many years before the civil rights movement.

This DVD is available through the Juneau Library Systems. During this time of celebration of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, we shall do well to recall and think about the Constitution and Bill of Rights for each and all of us.

Elizabeth Peratrovich was a heroine among us and has a message for today.
