ANCHORAGE — A 23-year-old rookie from Willow has won the Yukon Quest sled dog race.
Dallas Seavey crossed the finish line in Fairbanks at 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday, just 33 minutes ahead of musher Sebastian Schnuelle. Seavey previously came in eighth place in the 2010 Iditarod.
The Anchorage Daily News reports that he is the youngest winner in the history of the race, which began in 1984. The paper said he earned a paycheck of $28,395 for his rookie effort.
The 1,000-mile trail starts at Whitehorse. It traces the routes of prospectors during Alaska’s gold rush in 1899.
Twenty-three teams began the race Feb. 5 in Canada’s Yukon territory.
