School zone safety

Posted: Tuesday, February 18, 2003

This letter is being written on behalf of the Floyd Dryden Middle School crossing guards. We're sure we speak for all our district's crossing guards when we say, "Please slow down and drive safely!" We are out there everyday, no matter the weather, to ensure the children in our community are getting across the roadways safely. Some Juneau drivers have been ignoring the speed limit and flashing lights, which do mean 15 or 20 mph, depending on the location.

When the safety of the children is at stake, we ask that you please slow down and be watching for them. We also ask that you watch out for us. We know our job can be a dangerous one, but you can help make it safer for us and the children. You might like to know that we do carry radios that enable us to communicate instantly with the main offices of our school. Why should this interest you? Well, if you are speeding or do not heed our stop signs, we can have your license plate number reported to the police. Most drivers know the tickets and fines that occur in a school zone are double. Most people could probably overcome the expense of a ticket, but what about the life of an innocent child or crossing guard? Please drive safely.
