ANCHORAGE - The Navy awarded the Bronze Star to a Wasilla naval officer for service beyond the call of duty in Iraq.

Chief Petty Officer Brian Vesco received the medal for meritorious service Thursday in a ceremony at Fort Richardson.

Vesco was in charge of security and planned 350 movements for a communications team in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.

The information technician chief twice was in a convoy that came under fire.

Vesco was recognized for reacting and returning fire, which his superiors said ensured the safety of members of the convoy.

Vesco has served in the Navy for 23 years. He moved to Alaska in 2004.

He said he plans to serve two more years and then retire.
