Les Schwab feeds Subway a donut

Watts, Weltzin score in 2-0 blanking of Women's Tier rivals

Tami Watts and Kristina Weltzin broke a scoreless tie for Les Schwab with a goal apiece during a seven-minute span of the second period, and Subway fell in a 2-0 loss Sunday in Juneau Adult Hockey Association Women's Tier action at Treadwell Arena.

Watts' unassisted goal came just minutes into the second period, and Weltzin's followed exactly seven minutes later off helpers from Lisa Eagan-Lagerquist and Mary Hausler.

Les Schwab outshot Subway 15-8 in the game and received a perfect eight-save effort from goalie Jason Bluhm.

Rich Morris picked up 13 saves in the net for Subway but did not receive the offensive help he needed for the win.

WOMEN'S TIER

Green 4, AK Dames 1

Benthe Mertle sandwiched a pair of early goals around an assist to help Green jump out to a 3-0 lead and cruise to the win over AK Dames Sunday night.

Mertle broke open the game's scoring midway through the first period off an assist from Marissa Florendo. The teammates then paired up to provide helpers on Nellie Ballou's score early in the second stanza. Mertle wrapped up her busy scoring night six minutes later with another helper from Florendo and Bess Ranger.

Mary Ellen Arvold responded to the Green flurry with AD Dames' only goal of the night - an unassisted effort with five minutes left in the second.

Jessie Kovach closed out the game's scoring with an unassisted score with 3:03 left in the second period.

Green outshot AK Dames 21-5 in the contest.

MEN'S A TIER

Green 8, Island Pub 0

Green's lush offense yielded two goals in both the first and second periods before exploding for another four in the third, picking up the laugher over Island Pub.

Mike Bovitz's unassisted hat trick led the Green effort. Bovitz also added a pair of assists on both of teammate Steve Box's scores.

Dan Teske, Nick Korzen and James Woods each added a goal apiece in the shutout victory. Woods also racked up a pair of assists.

Green outshot Island Pub 14-7 in the contest.

MEN'S B TIER

Bleu Chunks 3, Orange 1

Pat Malecha lifted Bleu to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals late in the first period, and Orange failed to score in the final two stanzas Sunday night.

Malecha's first goal was unassisted, but teammates Tom Schwartz and Chuck Guthrie teamed up to provide the helper on his second effort.

Ben Van Alen responded with Orange's only score of the game with 3:11 remaining in the first period, scoring off an assist from George McGuan.

Jamie Marks finished off Orange early in the second period, getting a helper from Bleu teammate Brant Oliphant.

Both teams managed 17 shots in the game, but Bleu goalie Jeffrey Goetz's 16 saves lifted his team to the win.

MEN'S C TIER

Glacier Seafoods 6, Purple Haze 4

A pair of hot offenses traded runs through the first two periods, but Glacier Seafoods outscored Purple Haze 4-2 in the third stanza to pick up the win Sunday night.

Glacier jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead early in the first, led by a goal and assist from Mark Ruby. Purple responded in the second, with the top two-thirds of Colby Shibler's hat trick coming in the period's final two minutes to forge a 2-2 tie.

Zach Jones and Bill Hill put Glacier back on top by two in the opening minutes of the third with a goal apiece. Shibler's third goal cut the lead to just one four minutes later, but a wild final two minutes sealed the win for Glacier.

Josh Yerkes pushed Glacier ahead 5-3 with 1:23 remaining, but Purple's Jess Wakefield answered back with 34 seconds on the clock. Ruby eventually found the net for Glacier again with :08 remaining to seal the win.

Grey 3, Green 2

Kara Hollatz and Jon Hollatz both scored in the third period to lift Grey out of a late hole and over Green Sunday night.

Grey jumped out to an early lead with the only score of the first period - Jon Barton's unassisted goal at the 11:12 mark.

Green responded in the second, though, with a goal each from Pat Horan and Tobias Sandberg to take a 2-1 advantage. Horan was assisted by Jim Isturis and Annie Smith. Sandberg got helpers from Lissa Kramer and Horan.

Grey finally climbed back in the third with the Hollatz's scores. Kara was assisted by Jon and Dennis Bailey. Jon was assisted by Stephen Lewis.
