FAIRBANKS - Alaska's freshman U.S. senator said despite last-minute disagreements, the $787 billion stimulus package was a bipartisan effort.
The stimulus bill was signed into law Tuesday by President Barack Obama.
Begich, a Democrat, spoke after some Republicans criticized the plan as misdirected spending.
He told the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce that senators from both parties developed the bill. He suggested he sensed much of the criticism that emerged hours before a Senate vote was engineered as show.
He said they "didn't just do this haphazardly."
