Delta Junction man being held in Canada

Posted: Friday, February 20, 2009

FAIRBANKS - A Delta Junction man charged with attempted murder has been detained by Canadian authorities after trying to cross the border.

Authorities say James Mead was attempting to flee to Canada after allegedly firing shots at a man inside a motor home Feb. 11. The other man was shot in the knee. The state of Alaska is seeking extradition.

The state says Mead, however, is claiming refugee status in Canada, citing religious persecution.

A Canadian court hearing is scheduled Monday.
