NMFS settles with man who killed seal

JUNEAU - The National Marine Fisheries Service has reached a settlement with a Juneau man charged with shooting a harbor seal two years ago.

Gunner Noreen, a gillnet fisherman, shot and killed the seal at Taku Inlet on July 15, 1999.

NMFS officials said Noreen admitted to the shooting, agreed to pay a $5,000 penalty and forfeited the rifle used in the incident. A portion of the penalty will be suspended for five years, provided Noreen has no further violations of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the agency said.

Officials with the fisheries service said the violation was reported by a crew member on Noreen's boat. The agency is seeking a reward for that person.
