Boys from all the Packs in Juneau cheer on their race cars in the citywide Pinewood Derby held Feb. 6 at the Moose Lodge. Although cars haven't changed much in 50 years, the technology used in conducting the races have improved significantly. While many packs still race on hand-made wooden tracks, Pack 21 in Juneau has an aluminum track that assembles and disassembles easily. The track includes a computerized timer that automatically records first, second and third place in each race and the time, to the fraction of a second. A neat addition to this year's event was a car that carried a wireless video camera. The car did not compete in the races but provided an exciting look at the track from the view of the moving car.
