Ice tragedy

Posted: Tuesday, February 22, 2000

Tragedy struck a family out on an outing Monday afternoon, when two children broke through the ice at Fish Creek on North Douglas. One of them died, along with his mother, who had gone to his rescue.

The heartbreak is difficult to imagine. But it serves as a reminder to all parents to admonish their children that ice-covered water is not safe right now. Although nights have dropped below freezing in some places, the days have warmed and the ice on various ponds and streams is now rotting away.

Our hearts go out to the family of Tuesday's tragedy. May parents all over the Juneau area take heed of what happened at Fish Creek, and warn their children of the danger.
