Mary D. Fishel, 88, died Feb. 17, 2002, at her home in Gresham, Ore.
She was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Rosebud, Ill. In 1941 she married Donald R. Fishel and traveled extensively with the U.S. Army. In 1960 they moved from Fort Richardson to Juneau, where they lived until 1974. She was instrumental in starting the Juneau Community College, now known as the University of Alaska Southeast, and worked there for 11 years, being the registrar at the time of her retirement. In 1974 they moved to Roseburg, Ore., and lived there until her husband died in 1994. She then lived in Gresham, Ore., until her death. Her family said in her later years she enjoyed oil painting and other types of arts and crafts.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Thornburgh and her children Yevette Johnson, Portland, Ore., and Cody Johnson, his wife Alicia, and their children Dylan and Ariel, Battle Ground, Wash.; son Robert D. Fishel, his wife Jeanette, and their children Will and Katie, Juneau; brother George Chaffin and his wife Opal, Corvalis, Ore.; stepson Terry Fishel, his wife Georgiana, and their children Tammy Berks and William Fishel, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the home of Mary Ann Thornburgh from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at 2217 SE 159th St., Portland, Ore.
