Learn to handle the responsibilities of sex

Letter to the editor

Understanding the intensely personal nature of the whole argument and with respect to those who disagree, I'd like to weigh in in favor of Planned Parenthood coming to Juneau. My view is that declaring abstinence, while obviously 100 percent effective in preventing every ill effect of sexual activity, is unrealistic when applied to the general population of human beings around us. It was only marginally effective 35 to 40 years ago, when I was a teenager, and there were few resources for teaching young people how to understand and manage their sexual impulses.

Here's the big bugaboo - while we tell young people not to indulge, the truth is this aspect of our physical, emotional and spiritual selves, in the right circumstances unique to each person, can be one of the best things there is in this life. We should encourage organizations that help people manage the immense responsibilities associated with it.
