Commercial fleet feels pocketbook pain

Letter to the editor

Posted: Thursday, February 22, 2007

I find it extremely ironic that an article from the Homer Tribune, dated Feb. 14, states that the charter fleet thinks the decision of the halibut commission to impose a reduced bag limit has caused it heartache, and pain in the pocketbook.

Sound off on the important issues at

Be informed, charter guys, the commercial fleet pays up to a 3 percent fish tax, plus we initiated the individual fishing quota program (at our expense) to control the resource. We adhere to those regulations (unlike the charter fleet, which doesn't seem to care about the guideline harvest allocations).

Get real. The charter guys have no idea what heartache and pain in the pocketbook really is.
