JUNEAU - The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension, Juneau District is now enrolling for its 2009 Master Gardener course. This 40-hour course, to be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from this Monday to March 16 at the Bill Ray Center, 1108 F St., will teach gardeners specific skills to design, plant and maintain successful gardens in Southeast Alaska.
A team of university professors and local experts will train participants on plant growth and development, soil and plant nutrition, vegetable gardening, composting, mushroom cultivation, flower gardening, plant propagation, fruit and berry crops, lawn care, ornamental trees and shrubs, greenhouses, integrated pest management, community gardening and local marketing.
The course will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Students are expected to offer 40 hours of service to share their new skills with the community.
